Egypt does not abandon its good manners! Military trials against civilians

(BRUSSELS2) Twenty MEPs representing almost all political parties - from Tory Charles Tannock (ECR) to Ana Maria Gomes (S&D) via Marietje Schake (ALDE), Mario David (EPP, president of the EU-Mashreq delegation) or Hélène Flautre (Greens) - have written to Catherine Ashton, the High Representative of the EU to draw her attention to the military trials to which civilians are subjected. " More than 10.000 civilians do not have the same rights (as Mubarak and his family) and are brought before military tribunals. We are witnessing today the same intimidating and illegal practices that remind us of the old regime. In statements made in recent weeks, the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces has accused several youth movements and individuals of inciting violence and creating unrest. Additionally, hundreds of protesters have been prosecuted in military courts and sentenced to years in prison without being able to speak to their families.” And the signatories to ask the European Union to express its concern and not to engage further in the partnership without asking for respect for human rights and the rule of law.
