Malta recognizes the Libyan CNT

Prime Minister Gonzi with former Libyan Ambassador to the UN Abdel Rahman Shalgham (Maltese Government)

(BRUSSELS) A small Mediterranean state, Malta occupies a key position vis-à-vis Libya, geographically, economically and politically. The statement made by the government to recognize the Libyan opposition and the NTC as the " only legitimate interlocutor of the Libyan people » therefore has a far reaching impact. It is the fourth State of the European Union - after France, the United Kingdom, Italy (even Poland) - to take this path and not the least. It is a notable sign of evolution which could now be followed by several others and signify the end of a political divide which has crossed the 27 Member States of the European Union recently, even if certain countries (Germany, Bulgaria) will remain reluctant for a few more days to take this step.
