2011 Short Film Festival: go ahead!
Brussels2 joins forces, with pleasure, with the Brussels Short Film Festival which takes place from April 28th to May 8th. I have followed this festival professionally (and personally) for several years. In a few years, it has grown and diversified. But he still delights me. So if you are in the Belgian/European capital, at this moment, run there. If only for a session or two. You will find pearls, moments of emotion or laughter.
69 films will be in the running for the competition, 50 of which come from 18 European countries. And this year, Hungary is in the spotlight. Two 1h30 sessions to talk about war, rags, guts and onions... (to see an extract from the films, it's here).
Some movies : sooner or later (Hungarian film): Germany, 1945, at the end of World War II, the Nazis are experimenting with a time machine in an attempt to wrest victory from the clutches of impending defeat. Land of the Heroes (Belgian film): Iraq, 1988, in the war-ravaged country, two children would like to watch cartoons on television. But no matter how much they zap on all the channels, there are only soldiers everywhere! ØNSKEBØRN/ Out of love (Danish film): Kosovo, 1999, two children try to survive by selling cigarettes in the street. Nawewe (Belgian film): Burundi, 1994, a confrontation close to the genocide between a rebellion mainly of ethnic Hutu to a national army mainly Tutsi. El Ambidiestro (Spanish film): 1937, in the midst of the Spanish Civil War. A man wakes up with amnesia on the battlefield. On one side of the trenches as on the other, no one recognizes him, no one can come to his aid. Etc. Etc.
The screenings take place in Ixelles (at the Vendôme cinema, at the Flagey centre, at the Mercelis theatre) as well as at the Bozar. And, for newsletter subscribers to this blog, a surprise. The festival offers 2 x 2 very short passes for the whole festival (except opening and final screening). Send by return address, your request...
