The Italians also out on Libya

Italy will be on the front line in the operation in Libya due to its geographical and historical proximity. It thus made available to the Allied forces seven of its air bases, in particular Trapani (in the west of Sicily) and Sigonella (in the east of Sicily, near Catania). Reconnaissance planes could be deployed over Libya as well. At Sigonella, the 6 Danish F-16s have already arrived on Saturday morning and could thus be operational on Sunday.

On the maritime side, at least five Italian ships are currently deployed in the Mediterranean, according to the peninsula's media. the destroyer Andrea Doria - specialized in air and missile defense - is in the waters of the Strait of Sicily with the supply ship Etna ; the patrolman Pound sails to the Libyan coast with the frigate Euro in support.

NB: Italy is the only country to have a (consular) representation in the city of Benghazi.
