Means of Operation No Fly Zone – Libya NATO (Maj)
(BRUSSELS2) The No Fly Zone operation will come under NATO control from Sunday. Here are some of the means that complement the French, British and American means - also responsible for the "protection of civilians".
Belgium. 6 F-16s, with 250 men (pilots, mechanics, support). Based in Araxos (Greece). Code name: "Freedom Falcon".
Canada. 6 CF-188 Hornets (F18) + CC-150 Polaris tankers + 200 members of the Forces. Based in Trapani (Italy).
Denmark. 6 F-16s (4 attack and 2 in reserve) as well as a tanker aircraft. Base of Sigonella (Sicily - Italy).
Spain. 4 F-18, belonging to the Ala 12 and a Boeing 707 aerial refueling plane, belonging to the 47 group. Based in Decimomannu (Sardinia - Italy).
Greece. 4 F-16 aircraft for no-fly zone patrols, as well as two Search & Rescue helicopters.
Italy. 4 Tornado ECR (electronic reconnaissance/combat) bombers and 4 F-16 interceptor fighters. + tanker aircraft Trapani base (Sicily - Italy).
Norway. 6 F-16s and their support elements. About 100 soldiers.
Netherlands. 6 F-16 aircraft based in Decimomanu (Sardinia - Italy) for 3 months + 1 KDC-10 tanker aircraft (until April 4). Of the 6 fighter planes, 4 are in use and 2 are on a reserve basis. 10 pilots, some experienced others younger, to acquire this experience. And a detachment of 160 to 170 people, technical support, maintenance and life support. Missions: surveillance, intelligence and surveillance of traffic to Libya. Possibility of interception in aircraft flights but no fight against land targets or targets at sea.
Qatar. 4 Mirage, based at the base of Souda (Crete - Greece) with French Mirages.
United Arab Emirates. 12 combat aircraft, six F-16s and six Mirages.
* Sweden. 8 JAS 39 Gripen combat aircraft, 1 Hercules in support, 130 people (up to 250 maximum). A bill approving this contribution was tabled in the national parliament on Tuesday (March 29).
