The criminological analysis laboratory soon on track in Afghanistan

It is one of the most recent projects of the European Defense Agency. A very concrete project (one of the only ones, the pessimists will say) which should be operational quickly. The experimental criminological analysis laboratory will indeed be deployed on the ground, in Afghanistan, within the ISAF (NATO's international security assistance force), in mid-2011. It will include a team of experts of around twenty people.

Objective: to enable scientific analyzes to be carried out on the origin of the ingredients used in improvised explosive devices (IED), a better understanding of their functioning and monitoring of their composition. Until now, the first collection of elements (level 1) was carried out in the field and the in-depth analysis (level 3), carried out in a European laboratory. An item was missing. It will be done now. " The second level of investigation and forensic analysis will be carried out on site by this new laboratory “says an expert on the file.

It took less than a year between political approval (in May 2010, by European Defense Ministers) and deployment in the field. What deserves to be pointed out. Another notable fact, this project was entirely financed by the European budget (1 million euros), it was designed within the European Defense Agency which wrote the specifications and bought it. France serves as the framework nation. And a Spanish company, Indra, produces the technical model. If Afghanistan is the first field of deployment of this tool, nothing prevents however to think that it could be deployed elsewhere, later. Or that “little brothers” follow.

NB: IEDs are responsible for half of the deaths of troops deployed in Afghanistan 352 soldiers killed in 2010.
