Ivory Coast: European emergency humanitarian aid

The European Commission must announce the release of a first humanitarian aid for Ivory Coast for an amount of 5 million euros. Objective: to assist refugees who arrive in neighboring countries. For several days, the decision had been prepared in advance, by the Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid, Kristalina Georgieva, “just in case”.

The work is complicated by the political situation. On the one hand, it is a question of not putting local partners who work with the European Union in the country at odds. On the other hand, in Liberia, it is necessary to negotiate with a government reluctant to set up camps (a curious reversal of the situation: until now it was the Liberians who found refuge in the Ivory Coast).

The first concern of humanitarians will therefore be the “protection” of refugees. THE " information from the field is still imprecise for the moment on the number of refugees”, explains a person close to the file. " We sent experts to border crossings to assess the situation. With the departure of most of the expatriates from the EC delegation in Abidjan, local employees and the delegations from Liberia (or Guinea) have therefore taken over.
