Greek appointed as EU ambassador to Geneva
Angelos Pangratis, current deputy head of the EU delegation in Washington, should be appointed as head of the EU delegation in Geneva, in charge exclusively of the WTO. A newly created embassy to respond to the logic of the new diplomatic service.
This embassy will be dedicated to multinational issues (UN, ...) classic diplomatic terrain where the Commission shares; the other will be dedicated to trade issues, a subject on which the Commission has exclusive competence. It seemed difficult, according to the European Commission, for the same person to exercise both functions. In terms of the number of meetings it is impossible to hold. And it was just as essential for the smooth running of the negotiations that he had the rank of ambassador (1).
Born in 1956, in Corfu, a graduate of the University of Paris I Panthéon Sorbonne, with a doctorate in international law, European and economic studies (1983), Angelos Pangratis has spent most of his career at the European Commission. Among other positions, he was Head of Investigation in the Anti-Dumping Division (1987–1990), Head of Personnel and Budget in DG External Relations / Trade (1997-1998), Head of Unit in charge of relations with China, Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, South Korea and Mongolia (1998-2003) before serving as Head of the EC Delegation to Argentina (2003-05).
