The Kenyan navy killed three pirates on Friday evening. The pirates apparently, under cover of night, mistook the warship for a merchant ship and boarded it.

The incident occurred at 23:15 p.m. in the waters of Kilifi, 40 miles from Mombasa, according to our Kenyan colleagues. A fourth man managed to escape by jumping overboard. But he drowned according to the Kenyan navy spokesperson.

Kenya has recently intensified its maritime patrols along its coasts and in the Indian Ocean, in response to the extension of Somali piracy towards the south.
