The presence of Russian troops on the borders of Georgia: "it calms"

(BRUSSELS2) “ We must recognize it. From the moment these “borders” were secured by Russian soldiers and no longer by the Ossetian police, things became calm. There are no more incidents or shootings. It's all over now. explained Krzysztof Lisek, a Polish MEP (Civic Platform / EPP) who was reporting to the last meeting of the defense sub-committee in the European Parliament on his visit to Georgia in July. And whoever speaks, recognizes it himself: I am not a fan of the presence of Russian soldiers in the region ". Besides, this " observation is corroborated both by the Lithuanian or Polish ambassadors and by the American ". However, the MP is not satisfied with the current situation which makes it impossible for European observers to enter the two former Georgian provinces which have declared their "independence".

« The situation in the region is stable but remains very fragile. Contacts with Abkhazia and South Ossetia are very poor. The Georgian authorities have confirmed this themselves: there are no relations with South Ossetia and only unofficial and occasional contacts with Abkhazia. » And the MEP concludes: “The EUMM missions must be extended to Abkhazia and South Ossetia. "But - he admits" it's more of a diplomatic job ". A work to be continued. Because “EUMM is the only international force present in Georgia and therefore plays a vital role for the security of Georgia by providing the only presence of international observers in the country”.
