(BRUSSELS2) In the end, it was the former British ambassador to Sudan, Dr Rosalind Marsden, who was appointed as the EU's special representative to replace the Dane Torben Brylle, who is leaving for other horizons.

In his roadmap drawn up by Lady Ashton, the Union's chief diplomat, the preparation of the referendum in Abyei and South Sudan and "sustained attention" to the delicate situation in Darfur... Effective entry into office: 1st september.

Rosalind Marsden has the advantage of knowing the country well where she has been Her Gracious Majesty's Ambassador for the past three years (April 2007 to May 2010). Essential for future events. She is more of a regular at "hot" posts. She was posted in Basra, Iraq (2006-2007) and Kabul, Afghanistan (2003-2006). She also served at the Foreign Office as head of the United Nations department (1996) or section head of the European Communities department (1983-1985).
