Piracy – the ABCs of preventing pirate attacks: latest edition!
(BRUSSELS2) The EU Anti-Piracy Center (MSCHOA) has just published a new version of best practices - Best Management Practices (better known by the acronym BMP) - for combating pirate attacks off the coast of Somalia, in the Gulf of Aden and the Arabian Sea. From the experiences collected by the anti-piracy forces, the recommendations were gradually refined to allow greater efficiency. Thirteen maritime industry organizations participated in this update along with EUNAVFOR, the NATO Maritime Command Center and the UK Maritime Commerce Operations Center (UKMTO). 13 copies were published. And the goal is to make it the standard documentation on the deck of any merchant ship. It includes both prevention measures and knowledge of the areas crossed, as well as self-protection measures, what to do in the face of pirates (in particular taking shelter in a secure structure at the bottom of the ship) or in the face of an armed intervention.
Towards an action plan for the protection of the Seychelles EEZ
It should also be noted that all the specialists in the fight against piracy are meeting in the Seychelles on July 12 and 13 at the invitation of the government of the archipelago to draw up an action plan on maritime threats in the region. In particular, certain risks that affect the vulnerability of the exclusive economic zone of the Seychelles are involved: piracy but also illegal fishing or trafficking in arms and drugs. Should be present in addition to international organizations (African Union, Indian Ocean Commission, UNODC or European Union, NATO ...), several States such as South Africa, India, but also China, Egypt , the United Arab Emirates...
