A former Czechoslovak general, European commissioner?
(BRUXELLES2) The Czechs still have the same sense of provocation. The Communist Party of Bohemia and Moravia has proposed a career soldier from the Czechoslovak army, Vladimir Remek for the post of European commissioner. Having finished lieutenant general, he was incorporated in 1966, finished the aviation school and started as a military pilot in 1970, deputy for the air force from 1973 to 1975, commander of an aviation division of the Czech army from 1976 to 1980, he became after the velvet revolution, director of the military museum in 1990 of aviation.
The first European cosmonaut
Above all, Remek has another feat to his credit: having been the first Czech and even European to fly in space. At the time, he had done it on a Soviet Soyuz flight, in March 1978 (10 years after the crushing of the 1968 revolt). Which was not very common... It was also done hero of the ussr. This cosmonaut could therefore very well occupy the seat of the "high-flying scientist" that José-Manuel Barroso wanted to have for his future European Commission. He is currently a member of the European Parliament on the benches of the Communist Left.
However, this candidacy has very little chance of succeeding.
This party being a minority and not participating in the government. The leaders of the two major parties in power, Topolanek (ODS, right) and Paroubek (CSSD, social democrats) are also visiting Brussels these days (Topolanek, Wednesday, Paroubek, Thursday) to see the President of the Commission European Union, José-Manuel Barroso and discuss (among other things) their candidate for the post of European Commissioner and the ratification of the Lisbon Treaty by the Czech Republic.
