Who will command Atalanta II?
(BRUSSELS2) The force generation conference to prepare for the extension of the European Union's anti-piracy operation off the coast of Somalia in 2010 (Atalanta II) which took place last week in Brussels was a "succès"and might even"be sufficient without the need to convene a second", we say to the Council of the European Union. In any case, a certain number of countries - almost all those taking part in the operation - have expressed their desire to renew their commitment. And some who were not very present (Finland in particular) have arisen. For third countries, it will be in a second stage. It now remains to specify the offers and above all to distribute them over time, or even to make choices.
The operation in 2010 would include an average of 6-8 boats (including a supply tanker, an essential tool) and 2-3 maritime patrol aircraft, for an area ranging from the Red Sea to the Seychelles, via the Gulf of Aden. The agreement with Kenya would remain in force (for the delivery of pirates and supplies). Another is being negotiated with the Seychelles, or even with an Arab country (Oman?).
Lots of offers to order. On the command side, it seems clear. The Operation Command (OHQ) would remain in Northwood, near London (and not by the sea - as I have seen in a few articles!) under British command, with two deputies appointed over six months. As for the rotating field command system (FHQ - force command), it will continue, divided by 3-4 months. Only problem! There are too many applicants. According to certain military sources, no less than six countries have in fact made an offer to provide a "flagship" and command the operation in the area: Spain, Italy, Greece, France, Germany, Sweden.
