The nine Maestrale pirates could be tried in Italy

(B2)Finally at the request of the government, the nine pirates seized, Friday May 22, by the Italian frigate, the Maestrale, could be repatriated to be judged in Italy, in Rome. According to the Italian press, the investigating judge in Rome, Ricardo Amoroso, following the request of the public prosecutor Giancarlo Amato and Pietro Saviotti, ordered that the nine suspects remain in provisional detention on the ship. But as soon as possible, a second court decision should allow their incarceration in an Italian prison. The navy will then have to do what is necessary to repatriate the suspects to the peninsula.
The nine pirates, heard Monday by videoconference by the Italian judge, explained that they "had been forced" to attack and seize the merchant ship by sponsors whose identity is not revealed. According to them, unknown people threatened to attack their family if they did not execute. The choice of l Boarding the Maria K was a bit haphazard."It's the first boat we've seen". According to their court-appointed lawyer, Francesca Baldassarra, the prisoners were
"serene"And"satisfied with their treatment on board".
