Numancia completes its first escort of a WFP boat

(B2) The Spanish ship, the Numancia, the new flagship of Operation Atalanta, which took over from the Greek ship, has just completed its first mission accompanying a World Food Program (WFP) ship. The escorted ships "Atlas I" and "Torgelow, thus transported nearly 5000 tons of humanitarian aid from Mombasa (Kenya), where the WFP has several warehouses, to Mogadishu (Somalia). The only incident recorded: an engine failure of The Atlas mechanics then came to the rescue.

Arriving in Mogadishu, the Spaniards took off their helicopter to check that there was no risk of pirates on the horizon. The area is known as particularly dangerous. The relay was then given to the forces of AMISOM (peacekeeping forces of the African Union in Somalia) who patrol the port.

NB: the WFP program provides food for approximately 1,6-1,8 million Somalis.
