Agreement with Kenya officially adopted by the EU Council of Ministers

(updated Fri Feb 27)
(B2) The Justice Ministers of the 27 adopted today (Thursday February 26) without discussion (in point A), an agreement to hand over the pirates with Kenya (agreement details). Note that Spain has indicated that this agreement should, as such, be ratified by its Parliament (and not the European Parliament as I have just mentioned). Finland signaled its opposition by saying “thatit would be impossible to transfer people” under this agreement “unless Kenya bilaterally provides sufficient legal guarantees that the death penalty will not be applied to those concerned“. (Finland did not commit naval or air assets to the operation, apart from officers at the operation headquarters). For download the decision (which will be published in the OJ).
