Russians increasingly present in the Indian Ocean

(B2)A second Russian ship, the Elnya, should quickly reach the Horn of Africa area “in the coming days”, according to our colleagues from the Ria agency. The Neoustrachimy, of the Russian “Baltic Fleet”, has already started to escort Russian merchant ships in the Horn of Africa region, says an internal source in the Russian navy. And it is in “permanent contact” with NATO ships patrolling the region, he added.

A strategic presence

This Russian presence in a region, until recent years, the “private preserve” of American ships is undoubtedly not only due to the sole objective of protecting merchant ships or the international fight against piracy. Longer-term strategic issues are also present. The Russian Navywill soon begin to intensify its presence in the World Ocean and in particular in the Indian Ocean, as well as in neighboring areas of the African continent“, also indicated the same Russian soldier. No doubt to counter the American desire to be more present in Africa – with its Africom command – and its incursions into what the Russians consider to be their zone of influence (Georgia and Ukraine in particular).
