The name of the EuNavFor operation in Somalia is… (and other news)

(B2) The Eunavfor operation should bear the code name "Atalanta". General Bentegeat, chairman of the military committee, confirmed this. Note that it is thus the British proposal that is retained. It is only fair in a way since the British will command the operation.

The force command could be ensured by rotation between a Greek, Dutch or Spanish officer, according to the boats present in the zone. The principle retained for the operation would indeed be that the force commander will be on one of the boats present in the area.

International involvement. To date, several additional countries have indicated that they may join the Union force. Egypt and Morocco (which have a large fishing fleet) could send at least one frigate. Even Israel - present on a few uninhabited islets - could discreetly participate in the operation by providing logistical aid (supplies, intelligence...)...

Penetration into Somali territorial waters. According to information sent to New York by the Provisional Somali Government (TFG) to the UN General Secretariat, seven States have made an offer to collaborate in the fight against piracy: three from the European Union (Denmark, Spain , France) and four outside the EU (Canada, United States, India, Russia). According to UN Security Council resolutions 1816 et 1838, these countries can thus pursue pirates in Somali territorial waters.

NB: It can be noted that none of the three countries of NATO's SNMG2 force (Greece, Italy, United Kingdom) are currently among these. This means that they have no right to enter Somali territorial waters to pursue pirates... (Read also: Between NATO and the EU, a new agreement is needed)
