Polish 17th Mechanized prepares for Battlegroup 2010

(B2)Soldiers from the 17th “Wielkopolska” Mechanized Brigade (17WBZ) have been selected to serve in the EU battle group (Battle group or GT 1500) which will be on duty at first half of 2010. Poland will serve as the framework nation for this EU light rapid reaction force, along with Germany, Slovakia, Lithuania and Latvia.

The core of the group will be made up of 800 soldiers, an infantry battalion of the 17th Mechanized Brigade, based in Mi?dzyrzeczu (Lubuskie), and equipped with 160 vehicles, including 53 armored vehicles,  Rosomak. It is one of the best equipped units in the Polish army, according to a spokesperson. The 17th is thus (or was) present on most of the external operations where the Poles were engaged (Afghanistan, Iraq, Chad).

NB: the battle group is made up of around 1500 men capable of deploying within 15 days after the political decision. They are able to carry out operations for one to three months.Another battle group will be on duty this semester, United Kingdom and the Netherlands.
