The diplomatic week continues in New York and London
(B2) After the meeting on Monday 15, in Brussels, of the 27 Foreign Ministers for their ordinary meeting, the week continues to be busy for Defense Europe. It should be noted that the 27 (or 26) gave the green light to the EUMM Georgia observation mission, to the launch of a coordination mission on maritime piracy EU NAVCO in Somalia as well as the participation of Croats in Operation Eufor Chad (read conclusions).
Some ministers will then meet in New York where the UN Security Council is taking place. With fundamental issues on the agenda: Chad (September 19 and 24), Afghanistan (September 18).
What about Minurcat in Chad and after Eufor?
- A private meeting with troop-contributing countries to the United Nations Mission in the Central African Republic and the Chad (MINURCAT) will take place on September 19 in the morning.
- Javier Solana, the High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy of the European Union will brief on 24 September on the activities of the European Union Peacekeeping Force (EUFOR) in Chad and in the northwestern part of the Central African Republic and will present its mid-term report. The Security Council will decide on the
renewal of the mandate of MINURCAT (it ends on the 25th).
ISAF Afghanistan's mission in question?
- On September 18, still at the UN, there will be a discussion which could be important on the renewal of the ISAF mission in Afghanistan. The mandate of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan expires next October (It will be interesting to see the position of the Russians or the Chinese, after the American incursions into Pakistan and the civilian victims).
Meanwhile, NATO Defense Ministers will gather for an informal meeting in London on 18 September. On the menu: capacity building but above all the possibilities of reaction after the Russian coup in Georgia and the treatment of future memberships, as well as the situation in Afghanistan (defence ministers will meet in Budapest in mid-October).
