The new EUTM Somalia camp in Mogadishu is being built

(BRUSSELS2) On the eve of the conference for Somalia "a new deal" for Somalia which is being held on Monday (16 September) in Brussels, the training camp for Somali soldiers in Mogadishu where the European soldiers of EUTM Somalia will work is in full construction as shown by the images that have just been filmed, in all discretion, by TV teams from Council of the European Union.

Ensuring the safety of European trainers and Somali soldiers

First task: erect a wall of sandbags to prevent any terrorist attack. " We are creating a secure area so that our staff can work safely” confirms an engineer participating in the European force. A priority. This security is, in fact, a sine qua non condition, put by several European countries to the transfer of part of the activities of EUTM Somalia from Uganda (where they are still established) to Somalia.

An important sign of a certain return to normal

« We are part of the process to bring stability and democracy back to Somalia underlines the Head of Mission, Irish General Gerard Aherne. " Somali forces are developing at this stage. It should be remembered that Somalia was until recently classified as a failed state. Today it is a state under reconstruction. There has been significant progress ". And to add. " There is a unique opportunity today to establish a democratic process, the rule of law and to support the federal government, as well as to ensure the security of the Somali people”.
