New elections in Mitrovica: skid tolerance 0

(BRUSSELS2) Implicated in the first round of municipal elections in northern Kosovo, on 3 November in (read: Elections in Kosovo. “A denial of democracy” (JA Derens), the Kosovar and international security forces have decided to pull out all the stops for the new elections scheduled for Sunday in three polling stations in the Serb-majority city of Mitrovica. (*)

A stronger presence

“Voters in North Mitrovica can expect a reinforced presence of the Kosovo Police (KP) outside the polling stations” states in a joint press release, the KP, EULEX (the European rule of law mission) and KFOR (NATO). “She will be supported by Eulex, visible on the ground. As for KFOR, “it will be present near polling stations and in other key areas”.

Immediate action in the event of an incident

The security forces have an executive mandate in the event of an incident. " Whether the electoral process or the safety of the voters is threatened, if that of the personnel and the observers of the polling stations is compromised, the KP, EULEX and the KFOR are ready to intervene immediately” adds the press release. Like the KP and the Kfor, the Eulex mission will thus be able to deter, retain, arrest or even carry out the investigation against any troublemaker. Notice to fans...

NB (*): After three incidents in polling stations and intimidation against Serbian voters, the results of the municipal elections had indeed been canceled and postponed to Sunday (November 17) in the three polling stations of the city of Mitrovica where the participation did not exceed 10%. The decision was taken on November 6 by the two Prime Ministers of Kosovo and Serbia, Hashim Thaçi and Ivica Dacic, under the aegis of the High Representative of the European Union, Catherine Ashton.
