Agreement on the treatment of pirates between the EU and Kenya initialed


(B2) The Czech Ambassador to Kenya, Margita Fuchsová, initialed, on behalf of the European Union, today (Friday 6 March) the agreement with the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Kenya on the conditions for the transfer of suspected pirates in Kenya. This agreement reinforces the deterrent effect of the EUNAVFOR operation, the Council of the European Union is assured. Friday 6 March 2009 European Union and Kenya have signed in Nairobi the agreement on the conditions of transfer of suspected pirates to Kenya. This agreement defines the modalities for the transfer of persons detained in the course of counter-piracy operations by the EUNAVFOR ATALANTA to Kenya for prosecution. The document was signed on behalf of the EU by Her Excellency Margita Fuchsová, Ambassador of the Czech Republic to Kenya, and for Kenya by Honorable Moses Wetang'ula, Kenyan Minister of Foreign Affairs. By enabling EUNAVFOR to bring pirates to justice, this agreement will enhance the deterrence effect of the operation.
