For the Djiboutian president, the battle for Mogadishu must be won

GuellehDjibouti-UN.jpg(BRUSSELS2) Speaking during a debate organized at the UN on peace and security in Africa, on May 19, the Djiboutian President, Ismail Omar Guelleh did not mince his words on the situation in its Somali neighbour, calling on the Security Council and the UN Secretariat to " have a different vision to resuscitate Somalia”.

The situation is " more chaotic than ever in Somalia “, he estimated, questioning the inefficiency and the internal quarrels within the transitional federal government. " Pressure must be exerted on the main elements of discord within the Somali Government, who must be put on unequivocal warning that they can no longer continue to undermine the activities of the Somali authorities”.

The capital, Mogadishu, is currently out of control, he added. And " Any government offensive to uproot the insurgents from Mogadishu will require a series of serious corrective measures in the security sector ". For him, there is no ambiguity: you have to decide " once and for all, in the absence of alternative options, to clear the Somali capital and its surroundings of extremist militants in order to secure the city, restore order and the rule of law ". Because " without a victory in Mogadishu, it will be impossible to prevent an avoidable disintegration of Somalia. " Conversely " If the capital is liberated, it will give the Government a large and solid base to control the whole country ».
